LaRomana, Domincan Republic

In January 2017, Fifty5five began visiting the Dominican Republic for the first time, hosting a Teacher Training and two Vacation Bible Schools in Batays and inner city Haitian communities.

While there, tentative arrangements were made to return each July for an undetermined period of time. Our next visit will be July 22- August 2.

A Batay is a community in the sugarcane fields where the Haitian workers and their families live. The living conditions are very poor with no running water or electricity. The average worker makes between $10-15 per day. There are over 100 batays in the region.
